Module one, Diagraming Design Precinct, required the modelling of Toyo Ito's Serpentine Pavilion and analysing its circulation patterns and thresholds in a diagrammatic form.

All drawings were created using a combination of Rhino and Adobe Illustrator.

The Diagraming Design Precinct task was
created in 2018 for a second year Bachelor of Design subject.

Toyo Ito’s Serpentine pavilion explores the articulation of interior and exterior spaces within his design. Through the use of glass, steel and voids he is able to create habitable spaces within the transitional zone. It is important not to neglect the often underutilised spaces/the spaces in-between as they may sometimes have surprising uses. The unexpected use of the openings as seating shows the functionality of the pavilion and appropriation of its spaces.

The following drawings and analysis diagrams were produced based on images and basic floor plans/elevations of the pavilion.

The circulation diagram provides an understanding of the primary circulation routes throughout the pavilion. Main routes are represented by bold arrows while lighter ones present secondary routes. The position of the pavilion on site may be seen to influence the primary circulation routes.

An understanding of the role that the various openings play within the pavilion have been explored in the threshold diagram. While these openings serve the function of being entry/exit points, connecting the inside with the outside, they are alternatively places to sit. The edges of each shape help define personal space and create greater privacy.
